March Into Reading - Finn It For Literacy
All Donations for the month of March will fund a scholarship program that promotes reading and literacy!
Finn It Forward recently awarded a scholarship to a 6th grade student who is struggling to read. This opportunity was brought to our attention by a community member who teaches outside of our district, but wanted to know if we could help! We were able to work with her, the student and his family, and Grosse Pointe Institute for Learning to provide a solution. After just a few sessions of one-on-one instruction, he's gaining confidence and showing improvement! Since March is National Reading Month, we've decided that all funds raised during the month will go to scholarships for reading / literacy. Everybody should know how to read! So- let's Finn It For Literacy!
Why are we partnered with Grosse Pointe Institute For Learning? The Institute has teachers that are trained and certified in the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching kids to read.
This program focuses on teaching kids to read at the word level. While it can help develop reading comprehension, that’s not the primary goal. Orton–Gillingham also puts a strong emphasis on understanding the 'hows' and 'whys' behind reading. Students might explore why the letter s sounds one way in the word plays and another way in the word snake. Once they know consistent rules and patterns, they’ll be better able to decode words on their own.
